Womans Suffrage Memorabilia

“Failure is Impossible” – Susan B. Anthony 1904

Because of countless millions of women who planned, organized, lectured, wrote, marched, petitioned, paraded, and broke new ground in every field imaginable, our world is irrevocably changed. Women and men in our generation, and the ones that will follow us, are living the legacy os-l300-4f women’s rights won against staggering odds in a revolution achieved without violence. Needless to say these pioneers -or suffragettes- have much to be proud of in the legacy of the Women’s Rights Movement, and a great deal to celebrate on the anniversary of the founding of the Women’s Rights Movement.

The official start of the suffrage movement can be traced back to the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 but memorabilia from the movement didn’t really surface until the 1890’s, with the introduction of new manufacturing techniques. Votes for Women was just one of the many slogans And, although most peoplOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAe think of the sash when the image of memorabilia during that time, another popular form of suffrage artifacts were buttons and the lapel pins.

Most of the larger and many of the smaller organizations produced buttons of some sort, generally emblazoned with their official colors.  While some of these buttons were generic, they often were manufactured for a particular campaign. There are period references to the fact that many suffragists collected them and advertised for varieties that they did not have, so many suffrage buttons embody interesting stories about their creation, their slogans, and their general use. There are a few great examples of button memorabilia that showcased here that reflect the slogans of the time. Pennants with lapel pins to adorn them are a large collectors item and ‘Votes for Women’ and “Ballots for Both” were popular slogans. votes_for_women_lapel_pin_nancy-2

In 1920, due to the combined efforts of all the woman suffragettes, the 19th Amendment, enfranchising women, was finally ratified. This victory is considered the most significant achievement of women in the Progressive Era. It was the single largest extension of democratic voting rights in our nation’s history, and it was achieved peacefully, through democratic processes.

A Little Lapel History…

Like woman’s fashion, men’s fashion has an equally interesting background. The styles are rooted in history and function, but have evolved into the fashion statements and ideas that we know today.

There are a plethora of choices when it comes to accessorizing menswear and the history is extensive. Handkerchiefs have long been displayed in the top pocket of men’s jackets and can be traced back to 1901. Although the first cufflinks appeared in the 1600s, they did not become common until the end of the 18th century. During the industrial revolution, neckties were designed long, thin and easy to knot and they did not come undone, setting the concrete design for the tie we know and love today. As it shows, men have been wearing fashionable accent pieces since the dawn of time.

The lapel pin has a unique history all its own. Most suit jackets come with a buttonhole, which was originally designed so that gentlemen could attach a cord from their hat to their jacket to keep it from blowing away on windy days. Eventually, as hats moved out of favor, the buttonhole got paired with another button on the opposite side of the jacket so it could be buttoned up all the way on unexpectedly cold days. Slowly lapel pins came in to view to adorn this part of a mans suit.

As time moved on in to  modern menswear, with its slim lapels and thin, technical overcoats, it’s a perfect place to show a little style. Pins may seem affected, but they’re really a no-brainer: you can put them on once, and then forget about them entirely, leaving it on between wears. It’s a pure expression of style. Pins are a subtle, simple, and are the next big menswear accessory.ButterFly_ShopCorrect_cb715367-d95a-4151-b40c-d27293672461_grande

As fashion often does, we’ve now seen these styles of old have a resurgence into days mens fashion world. Once again you will find vintage styles are making a comback once again.

Here at PinSource We can design lapel pin to suit any needs. If you want to have a classic vintage look replicating days of ol, you might consider, tie bar, cufflinks, or the classic lapel pin. When it comes to mens assecories we can customize it all. We’d be happy to help you design for a wedding or anniversary celebration or any special occassion you may like to adorn your lapel and wear a little bit of histor.

Choose Die Struck for Simple Elegance

Die Struck Lapel Pins are beautiful handcrafted pieces. In general they are identified by a raised and lowered metal look used with a simple design. They are classy and elegant without the use of any color. Sandblasting the metal can make images standout in addition to the contrast between the raised and lowered metal.  Our die struck lapel pins use a brass or copper base metal chosen for its softness to achieve a high quality stamping. You can select from one of our many plating choices and options to make your design truly unique.

Let’s look a little closer at the design of the die struck process and some  examples of how they are used:

Token of Recognition:  Add a synthetic stone, consecutive numbering, or any of our packaging options to create a perfect recognition pin.  The end product is something that a person can feel proud to wear and show off their achievements.

Logo and Branding:  The die struck process is most notable for its raised polished surface and recessed textured background, which can really make a logo look timeless and elegant. The textured background brings the smooth metal of the logo to the surface alowing it to (quite literaly) shine. Die-Cast works very well with certain timeless logos and translates to a very elegant piece for your employees to wear.

Anniversary Marker: People gravitate to die struck pins because of their density, durability, strength which makes them perfect to mark those employees who also exemplify these qualities. They represent a mark of distinction and pride and are a wonderful way to mark an anniversary for a special volunteer, teacher, or other employee.

How We do it  Part of the challenge of contemporary die-striking is that it requires extensive technical expertise and robust manufacturing capabilities.  Once a design has been finalized, we create a special die with your custom designed symbol. This die is then used to strike your design onto a copper or brass base metal. Copper and brass are soft enough for a sharp and detailed impression but durable for long-lasting use. A trimming tool is then used to cut out each die struck pin. Texturing is then applied to the pin, followed by the special polishing to create the contrasting to set off the raised images. After a final quality inspection, your custom designed die struck pins are carefully packaged and shipped directly to you.

Great Swag Ideas for Your Next Conference or Event

The main attraction of any live event is the content. But sometimes, it’s the little things that can make an event go the extra mile: the special surprises the coordinators throw in, the prizes companies hand out, the contests that take place. You know … the free swag! When event swag is really cool, it can really delight attendees at an event. So, to help out all the conference coordinators out there, we’ve collected examples of some of the best at events. We hope it helps inspire you to create awesome swag bags. m2622-mobile-device-charger-000

Mobile Device Charger Everyone and their mother is on their phone at conferences — all the time. Whether they’re tweeting, checking their email, or trying to meet up with other attendees, their phone is most likely going to be at 50% battery life by lunchtime. Give out mobile chargers, and every attendee will love you for it. Oh, and they’ll probably learn your name, too. Not only will they be pleasantly surprised when they see such practical and thoughtful swag, but having their phones charged will mean they’ll be able to engage even more throughout the conference, which is great for the conference coordinator. Finally, they’ll likely use that mobile charger beyond the last day of the conference. In other word, your logo will be exposed to them — and to others around them — long after the conference is over. That’s a beautiful thing.

sunglassesSeasonal Items Everyone likes unique gifts in their event swag bags. One way to make your swag bag stand out is by filling it with fun, seasonal items. Most companies don’t give out seasonal items because they’re looking for gifts that can be used year-round, but that fact alone makes these items even more special. If you’re hosting a summer conference or an event in a beach location, for example, then think about giving out items like beach towels, flip flops, and Frisbees. They cater to activities attendees can partake in during the event. Also, let’s think even another step ahead: When and where will attendees use your swag items? They’ll probably use beach items in public places where other people might see them and ask, “Where did you get that?” or “What company is that?” The result? Your company’s exposure will go far beyond the conference’s attendees. Technologo-VS_SKU_FO-43_(01)-2

Umbrellas  As many of you well know, unexpected rain can be one of the most frustrating annoyances at a conference — which is where free umbrellas can come in handy. Not only will it make their experience better, but it’ll also create buzz around how well prepared your company was for any given situation. Let’s face it, that’s just impressive. The great thing about umbrellas? You really can’t have too many of them. So you can be sure that your swag — with your logo on it, of course — will be used and seen long after the event ends.

Witty-T-Shirts-Statements-Men-T-Shirt-Quotes-Short-Sleeve-Teeshirt-For-man And last but not least … Tshirts. I know you have a million of them already, but if you’re giving away t-shirts with cool designs or sayings (as in, not just a t-shirt with your company name or logo on it), then chances are, a lot of people will pick one up — even if they’ve never heard of your brand before. Ask any event attendee and you learn that: witty T-shirts that you can’t buy from a store will ALWAYS be the top swag.

Twiddle Lapel Pin

Twiddle is a local band from Castleton, Vermont. And if you live in the Northeast, it’s highly likely that you know of them. Twiddle music is best described as improvisational jam-rock.  The band –which mixes reggae, funk, jazz, bluegrass and classical — was started by four students at Castleton State in southern Vermont in 2004. They reached success quickly in Castleton, toured the northeast, and produced a number of original songs, all before the members became upperclassmen.

The band seems to push  a philosophy of friendliness and positivity and the fan base has embraced it. In addition, they have very unique designs when it comes to their swag, which they sell at the concerts and festivals they play. Which leads us to the ‘Franken Foot’ pin project. Knowing that this was no ordinary band, we knew  that this would be no ordinary pin order.  But we were up for the challenge. Our staff member Brent Jarvis was the contact for Twiddle on the implementation of their pin. The pin itself is was very stylized and unique (see picture above). He had this to say about the process:

“Our hard enamel lapel pins, also known as Cloisonné pins or epola pins, are some of our highest quality and most popular pins.   For this particular design, a special glow in the dark enamel was used as the outlines of the ‘monster’ or ‘Franken Foote if you’re familiar with band Twiddle.  After holding in the direct sunlight outside for about 30 seconds, ttwiddle-652x367he pin was taken into a dark room and photographed to show it’s luminosity.   A very eye catching and different approach to pins!”

These pins are, indeed, eyecatching. According to their fan base – who call themselves Twidiots – they are certainly on board when it comes to buying up fun swag. Because Twiddle makes the effort to stay fresh  with their designs and merchandise,  their pins and hats are highly sought after at festivals.

Needless to say, it was an enjoyable and fun project for us to be involved in. We are always up for the challenge of creativity and helping our clients realize the full potential of a lapel pin. If you have a fun project or an idea or design you’d like to kick up a creative notch. Let us know! We’re here to help.

Lapel Pins & Classic Cars Have A Lot In Common…

car-showIt’s the end of summer which means people are shining up their classic cars for annual car shows. Here in Vermont, we have a classic car show in Stowe that attracts all types of admirers from around the country and the world. Over 800 antique & classic cars are on display to look over and admire, and the weekend finishes with an antique car parade through town. It’s a perfect way to finish off summer and take those cars for one last ride in the sunshine.

We’ve been thinking: Lapel pins and classic cars have a lot in common. Both are timeless pieces of memorabilia that can be used again and again. And let’s not forget about the collectable element! Cars are certainly a collectors’ item and, well, so are lapel pins! Just Google Lapel pin collections and you will find hundreds of links to groups all over the world who trade and sell their pins. You will see that they are certainly highly prized and sought after collectables. The design and color can vary from basic and lovely to customized and glamorous depending on your style and budget.Vintage_Car_Show_Keepsake_Lapel_Pin

Most importantly, they represent something you’re proud of. If you are an aficionado of a Chevy for instance, you can stand beside your Chevy OR out in the everyday world you could wear a Chevy pin.  Either way, people know what you’re interested in before they even shake your hand. It’s a conversation starter and shows pride in your hobby.

If you are a part of a club or group who tours your cars through these shows, isn’t it time to get more people excited about your club, or maybe a good opportunity to commemorate those in the group that go above and beyond? Your upcoming car show will be exciting.  You’ll have a large group of people come out to take a look at the different cars owned by your club’s members.  If you want to sell additional admission tickets this year and want to advertise your event in a new and exciting way, why not a lapel pin? Let’s face it–it’s so much better to pin something to your lapel than to get a inked hand stamp that takes ages to come off!

Ways That Custom Lapel Pins Can Be Used

There are a number of different ways that custom lapel pins can be used by clubs and groups.  Some of the most popular uses include:

  • For promotional purposes to advertise the event.
  • For identification purposes to show who is in charge of the event.
  • As thank you gifts for the people who have come out to see the classic cars.
  • As thank you gifts for the sponsors who have donated time and money to help make the event happen.

Different Styles for Different Needs

Car Lapel PinCustom lapel pins can be created in a variety of different sizes, shapes, styles, and colors to meet your needs.  Different add-on elements can enhance the quality of the artwork. Glitter, gemstones and precious metals are among some options you can select from.  This allows you to express the unique nature and history of the cars that your club members own.  Don’t forget to add text and even a date to make the pins relevant and exciting!

Tips from Fort Orange Wine Society on Starting Your Own Wine Tasting Group

wine-tastingYou don’t have to be an expert to enjoy wine, and getting together with a group of friends can be a fun way to explore different flavors of your favorite wine region.Wine tasting groups are certainly growing in popularity and what better way to enjoy the summer than  getting together with a group of friends to share a common interest.  The group can start at the ground level and grow together, learning and loving the taste of wines.

Here are some tips from the Fort Orange Wine Society on starting a simple group for a hands-on approach to learning about wine and gaining confidence in making wine selections.

1. Select people with the same degree of interest and commitment.

2. Prior to starting, have some discussion about goals — to explore new areas, learn about the grapes, study countries or other interests. You might do geographic areas, like Italy, France, or New Zealand.

3. Decide how often you will meet and how many people will be the maximum in the group.

4. Have some idea of whether this is strictly tasting wine for wine’s sake or social in nature. Along with that, talk about whether food is an inWineSocietytegral part of the club.

5. Decide how the wine will be selected and purchased choose a theme and purchases the wines and split the total.

6. Last but not least, come up with a little design or logo you can put on a pin or perhaps even a wine glass!

Most importantly remember: No one way is the “right” way; this is, ultimately, about friendship, learning, and having fun. Therefore, be sure to have fun and enjoy drinking good wine with good company.

In addition, long-time groups looking for ideas should think about new concepts: tasting the same wine in different glasses or the same type of wine, but from different countries. Truly, when it comes to wine, there is always something new to try.
